Station events: | 03 MAY 1955: Last Japanese, in fact a Korean named Pyonggi Takchon, holdout on Peleliu surrender to the CO of the loran station. The Korean was hid out for fear of the Americans. AUG 1955: Congressional led by Senate Johnson investigation of lack of fresh foods and slow mail. One of the crew members sponse started writing letters because of a couple letters received from the crew member. 1959: station relocated to northern part of island Late 1959: Entire crew summarily relieved 1960: Water tanks rebuilt 1962: Loss of Life, BMC drown, station small boat flipped, 2 station personnel received the CG Gold Life Savings Medal for their efforts 16 NOV 1964: station destroyed by Typhoon LOUSIE. Station off air for three days OCT 1965 - AUG 1966: Station rebuilt 05 DEC 1965: A canoe was overdue and CG searched with 16ft station boat. There was a mechanical engine failure. Four POBs were a drift for 12 hours before a CG plane spotted them. A local boat brought them back to shore. 1966: ET died by electrocution 1966/67: SN fell to his death from a cliff 1967: Station name changed 1972: FN transferred for being unstable JAN 1976: Two Spanish crewmembers of the supertanker "BERGE INSTRA" which sank in matter of minutes who were rescued by a Japanese trawler were handed over to USCG at Angaur. |
