Max Conrad* and David Shefler in Piper Comanche making an
emergency landing while on a world flight to promote Montreals EXPO
1967. The station crew assited in the repair of the aircraft.

Bill's Note: Max Conrad was a aviation pioneer who flew over both North and South poles among many other feats. At the time of landing on Marcus he had logged more than 45,000 miles. It was noticed that one of the engines was leaking oil. There was a Mayday call to the U.S.C.G. which dispatched a C-130 to excort the Piper aircraft to Marcus. It was determined that the plane could fly to Honolulu after minor repairs at Marcus and off they went.

Bill's note: From mid 1944 to end of the war the Allied Air and Naval forces bombed Marcus for traning missions and to keep the Japanese guessing which direction the invision would take place.. The Japanese troop strength was approximately 4500 and approximately 4500 Japanese soldiers surrendered.
